Breathwork

Breathwork is the most direct way to switch your body from “Bone-Breaking” (Sympathetic) mode to “Bone-Building” (Parasympathetic) mode.

When you are stressed, your breathing becomes shallow and rapid. This acidity-shifting pattern signals the body to release cortisol, which, as we’ve discussed, stops your bone-building cells (osteoblasts) in their tracks. By consciously changing your breath, you “hack” the Vagus nerve to lower cortisol and keep calcium where it belongs.

Three Breathwork Techniques for Bone & Hormonal Health

1. The 4-7-8 Relaxing Breath (The “Cortisol Killer”)

This is the “gold standard” for lowering systemic inflammation and cortisol.

How:

  1. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
  2. Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
  3. Exhale forcefully through your mouth (making a “whoosh” sound) for 8 seconds.

Why it works: The long exhale stimulates the Vagus nerve, which instantly lowers heart rate and blood pressure, signaling the body that it is safe to resume “maintenance” tasks like bone remodeling.

2. Box Breathing (The “Metabolic Stabilizer”)

Used by Navy SEALs to stay calm, this is excellent for stabilizing insulin and blood sugar spikes.

How:

  1. Inhale for 4.
  2. Hold for 4.
  3. Exhale for 4.
  4. Hold empty for 4.

Why it works: It creates a rhythmic balance that prevents the “gasping” or “sighing” that can lead to respiratory alkalosis—a state that messes with your blood’s mineral balance.

3. Diaphragmatic “Belly” Breathing (The “Estrobolome” Massage)

Deep belly breathing physically moves your diaphragm, which massages your internal organs and improves blood flow to the gut.

  • How: Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Inhale so that only the hand on your belly moves.
  • Why it works: This improves “gut motility,” helping your Estrobolome process and flush out excess estrogen more efficiently, reducing breast cancer risk.

The Nervous System “Building” Signal

  • Cortisol is the enemy of bone. Use your breath to signal “Safety.”
  • The 4-7-8 Reset: Do 3 rounds before every meal and before bed.
  • Inhale 4s — Hold 7s — Exhale 8s.
  • Bone Loading: 20 “Heel Drops” and 12 Wall Push-ups daily to provide the mechanical stress bones need to stay dense.
